Review: Forza Motorsport 6

I’ve spent the last couple of days hanging out with gamer’s who love the Forza Motorsport series and we talked about the series and how it’s improved from it’s early days. I borrowed them my controller for a couple of hours so that they can see what Forza Motorsport 6 has to offer and boy were they blown away.

Instead of the game featuring a predictable artificial intelligence that you can easily overtake, Forza Motorsport 6 features Drivatars, which is a form of artificial intelligence that replicates your friends driving habits and incorporates it into the game. Not only are your friends driving replicated but there’s someone out there racing against a virtual you in Forza Motorsport 6. The great thing about the Forza Motorsport 6 Drivatar’s is that they are unpredictable and from time to time you see them crashing into a barrier the same way you would when you’ve made a mistake during a race. This makes the races unpredictable and winning a race is no longer based on how fast your car is. You notice this when you play Forza 6’s career mode called Stories of Motorsport which is the best single player driver mode I’ve ever played. It takes you on a journey featuring different race tracks and car classes while rewarding you with credit and prize spins every time you unlock a new driver level. From racing cars that dreams are made off, to wobbling around a race track in juggernaut sport SUV’s like the Mercedes Benz G63, BMW’s X5 M and the 2014 Range Rover Supercharged, this mode features a wide variety of races to choose from, giving both hardcore fans of the game and new comers a great run for their money. I must say that racing in a 2014 Range Rover Supercharged is not the easiest of tasks as the car over steers quite a lot causing you slide around a race track as if you are driving on ice. The cars in Forza Motorsport 6 handle like their real life counter parts and if you find yourself crashing into a wall or another car you can always hit the Y button on your controller and the game will rewind a couple seconds before you made that mistake so that you can correct it, but I must say that the same rule also applies for you opponents. If you make a mistake and your opponents in front of you have also made a mistake, when you hit the rewind button, the game also corrects your opponents mistake.

The beauty of Forza Motorsport 6 is that you can tailor it to your liking by choosing the Drivatar difficulty you want to race against and by choosing which driving assists you want on. If you are a new comer to the game, you can choose to race against inexperienced drivers and as you gain confidence in the game you can start experimenting with the settings to see what works for you. The less assists you have on, the more rewards you earn at the end of every race. This same feature is found the games multiplayer mode where you take on the same drivers in your league and these matches are streamed to other Forza 6 players around the world which adds a bit more tension to the races. Forza Motorsport 6 also features Mods to races and these increase the amount of credit you earn that the end of each race. Some Mods are designed to help you gain better grip while racing on a specific track and some are meant to boost your cars performance. You can choose the Mod that best works for your car or which one will give you more rewards at the end of each race.

Forza Motorsport 6 ticks a couple of boxes in the visual department and it’s the first time in the franchisers history where gamer’s can race in the rain or partake in nights races. Day races are a thing of beauty and from time to time you are caught starring at the sunset instead of focusing on what’s happening on the track. The night races are as equally enjoyable as the day races and the developers of the game have replicated the race tracks beautifully because on race circuits like the Nürburgring where there’s no light on the other side of the circuit and the main straight is the brightest part of the circuit and you notice the sudden change in light when you are racing. Racing in the wet is a completely new experience and if you use the cockpit view, you can see the rain drops fall on the widescreen and being swept by the air as your car drives at a high speed . The car loses a bit of control when you hit a water puddle and requires you to counter steer in order to regain control but the water puddles always appear in the same places making them easy to avoid and the rain falls at a constant pace which makes things a bit boring after driving in the rain a couple of times. I would have loved to see a sudden change in the weather during a race, causing everyone on the track to rush to the pits and put on a set of tires that are suitable for racing in wet conditions.

Forza Motorsport 6 has over 400 cars to choose from and its single player mode is the best I’ve ever played. It gets a 9/10 and it’s available on the Xbox One.
